What's New: 'Order Ready' and 'Need More Time' (Coming Soon)

How does Order Ready and Need More Time work on the Sessions Tablet?

Your Sessions Serve tablet will soon have an 'Order Ready' button and a 'Need More Time' button - the same controls you already use on Deliveroo and Uber Eats tablets. Here’s what they do, and why pressing them matters.

See below for a preview of how this will look on your Serve tablet.

How to Use

ORDER READY

  1. Tap the check pill on the order card once it's actually ready. (You cannot activate this for the first 8 minutes of the order - before this a progress icon will show and will become tappable after this)

  2. The pill turns into a black "Order ready" badge.

  3. A confirmation bar appears at the bottom for 4 seconds with an Undo option - after that it locks in.

  4. This also clears any "Need more time" flag already on that order.

NEED MORE TIME

  1. Tap the clock pill on the order card - available on Deliveroo & Uber Eats delivery orders, while the order shows "Finding rider" or "Rider is on route." (No clock pill on collection orders, and it disappears once the rider arrives.)

  2. Choose "5 mins" or "10 mins" from the sheet that opens, or close it to back out without changing anything.

  3. The clock pill becomes a small "+5" (or "+10") badge. The check pill stays put, so you can still mark the order ready any time.

  4. It can't run alongside Busy Mode (Busy Mode replaces it with a busy badge instead), and once confirmed the only way to clear it is to mark the order ready.

Why It Matters

Right now, the delivery apps guess how long your food takes to make, then send a rider based on that guess. Guess too short and the rider stands around waiting while food goes cold. Guess too long and the food sits on the pass while the rider’s still minutes away.

These two buttons let you tell the platform what’s actually happening in your kitchen - in real time. No more guessing.

"ORDER READY" - Tap it the moment the order is bagged

What it does

Tells the platforms the food is done now, so it goes and finds the closest rider straight away - instead of waiting for its original estimate.

When to use

Ideally as many orders as possible, the second it's ready to handover - not just the ones you finished early.

The payoff

Hotter food our the door, fewer riders hanging around, faster deliveries, more accurate driver pickup times.

"NEED MORE TIME" - Tap it when an order will take longer than usual

What it does

Asks the platform to hold their rider back so they don't turn up to an order that isn't ready.

When to use

At peak times, big orders, or any time you can see an order slipping behind. The earlier you tap it, the better - this will give the system time to react.

The payoff

Less crowding at the counter, riders aren't left waiting (and unpaid), and your rider wait time stays green.

Tip: used “Need more time” but the order came together quicker than expected? Just hit “Order Ready” - the two work together.

The Feedback Loop

Every “Order ready” tap does two jobs, not one. It moves that order along - and it feeds data back into the platform’s prep-time model.

That model sets the countdown on every order at your site, including the ones nobody presses a button for. Deliveroo recalculates your Estimated Order Duration on a rolling 14-day basis; Uber Eats run similar loops. Tap consistently and the model tightens around your kitchen’s actual speed.

Skip it, and the model reverts to calculated guesswork - which shows up as wasted rider time on orders you never touched. Treat the button as operational data, not just a courtesy tap

FAQs

Which orders show the “Need more time” button?

Deliveroo and Uber Eats delivery orders, while the order is showing “Finding rider” or “Rider is on route”.

Can I add more than 10 minutes at once?

No - the sheet only offers two fixed amounts, 5 or 10 minutes, plus Cancel/Close.

I tapped “Need more time” by mistake - can I undo it?

Yes, but only before you confirm - tap Cancel/Close on the sheet. Once you’ve picked 5 or 10 minutes, the only way to clear it is to mark the order “Ready” when it’s actually done.

Why can’t I see “Need more time” once the rider has arrived?

It’s only offered in “Finding rider” and “Rider is on route”. Once the rider is here, holding them back doesn’t help, so the button isn’t shown.

What happens to “Need more time” if Busy Mode is switched on?

The button is replaced with a busy badge. The two can’t run together - both are ways of telling the platform your kitchen needs more time, so only one applies at once.

Why is “Order ready” greyed out and not tappable yet?

For the first 8 minutes of any order, it shows a check icon with a progress ring instead of a live button - that’s normal, not a fault. Tapping it just shows a short info popup. It becomes an active button once the 8 minutes are up.

Can I use “Order ready” on collection orders?

Yes - it works across delivery and collection orders alike.

I tapped “Order ready” by mistake - can I undo it?

Yes, for 4 seconds. An Undo prompt appears at the bottom of the screen right after you tap it. After that it locks in, so only press it when the order is genuinely ready.

I tapped “Need more time” but the order’s ready early - what do I do?

Just tap “Order ready”. It automatically clears the “Need more time” flag or badge on that order - you don’t need to do anything else first.
