Restaurant Microwave Cleaning Guide

Daily Procedure for Safe & Hygienic Use

Objective

To keep microwaves clean, odour-free, and food-safe by removing food splatter, grease buildup, and bacteria. A clean microwave reduces cross-contamination risks and maintains equipment performance.

Step-by-Step Microwave Cleaning

1. Preparation

  • Unplug the microwave (if possible).

  • Put on disposable gloves.

  • Ensure the microwave is cool before cleaning.

2. Loosen Food Debris with Steam (Optional but Recommended)

  1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with:

    • 1 cup water

    • Optional: 2 tbsp white vinegar or a few lemon slices

  2. Heat on high for 3–5 minutes.

  3. Let sit inside for 2 more minutes with door closed — the steam will loosen stuck-on food and deodorise.

  4. Carefully remove the bowl (hot!) and dispose of contents safely.

3. Clean Interior

  1. Remove the turntable/plate and wash it in the sink with hot soapy water.

  2. Wipe the interior walls, ceiling, floor, and door using:

    • A damp cloth or sponge

    • BS EN 1276 certified sanitiser spray

    • Focus on corners, vents, and door seals.

  3. Dry with blue roll or paper towel.

4. Clean Exterior

  1. Spray cloth with sanitiser (never spray directly on buttons).

  2. Wipe:

    • Control panel/buttons

    • Handle and door edges

    • Top and sides

  3. Buff dry to remove smears.

5. Reassemble and Final Check

  • Replace the clean turntable.

  • Plug microwave back in.

  • Perform a quick function test if required.

  • Record the cleaning in your daily equipment log.

❗Important Reminders

  • Never use harsh abrasives or metal scouring pads.

  • Avoid oversaturating near control panels to prevent electrical damage.

  • Clean immediately after major spills to avoid hardened buildup.

  • Always use food-safe disinfectants inside and around the appliance.
