Toasting buns sounds simple, but there's a subtle, pillowy art to getting them perfect. The bun is the first thing your customer picks up and tastes, so getting it right keeps every burger soft, hot and consistent.
🍔 Toasting Buns 1-Pager
You can print this 1-pager and keep it by the grill so your team toasts the same way.
Before service
Keep buns at ambient (room temperature) during service, not in the fridge.
The 6 steps
Toast first. Start toasting your bun before you start cooking your beef. For chicken, toast just before you fry.
Hot centre for 1 minute. Place buns on the hottest part of the grill for 1 minute.
Move to the edges. Slide them to the cooler edges of the grill so they keep toasting without burning.
Toast for 4 minutes in total. Keep buns on the grill until the top and bottom are soft to touch and hot all the way through.
Cook your patties. Once your buns have slightly softened (2–3 mins), smash your beef patties onto the grill and start cooking.
Cheese & build. Melt your cheese, grab your buns and start building.

Good to know
Vegan burgers: use a separate flat top, frying pan or bun toaster, and follow the same quality checks.
High-turnover sites: you can toast buns in advance and keep them warm in a covered metal tray for a maximum of 20 minutes.
Consistency = better burgers. Share this guide with your team so every shift does it the same way.
